Scottish Bakers Visit Harry Gow!

Back in the Summer of 2019 we were awarded the Scottish Baker of the Year for the 2nd time, making us the first bakers to achieve this since the competition began in 2012. This week, we welcomed the team from Scottish Bakers to launch the hunt for 2020s Scottish Baker Awards alongside Smithton and Duncan Forbes primary schools.

The pupils were challenged to ice our famous dream rings; jam and ice empire biscuits; cream and jelly a strawberry tart, and finally, complete the ‘Mich Turner Challenge’ which required them to buttercream a cake to her perfectionist eye.

Our generation-game style bake-off on the 12th February also launched the new ‘customer choice awards’ where the public are invited to vote for the favourite baked goods supplier until the 13th March.

The competition is now in its 9th year and brims with talent from across Scotland. We are unable to enter for the Scottish Baker of the Year for 2020, but you can vote for us in the customer choice by asking us for our unique QR code to scan in the shop. You can also vote by requesting a form in store or log on to the competition website www.bakeroftheyear.scot.

Not only did we win the sought-after title for 2019/20, we also took home:

Retail Craft Baker of the Year sponsored by Puratos

Best Individual Cake in Scotland for our Birthday Cake Slice and also in this category a Regional Bronze in Highlands and Grampian for our Pineapple Tart

Best Savoury in Scotland for our Chicken Curry Pie

National Silver Award for our Celebration Cake

Regional Silver in the Highlands and Grampian for our Ginger Crunch Biscuit

Regional Bronze in the Highlands and Grampian for our Wholemeal Bread

The competition received over 30,000 individual votes and was judged by 50 industry experts, so we are so proud to have taken home so many awards.

It’s been an honour to have Scottish Baker of the Year for the second time and makes all the hard work worth it.

We’d like to wish the best of luck to all the talented bakers in the competition this year! Winners will be announced on the 8th and 9th of May 2020. Voting is now open so get out there and vote for your favourite baker!
